Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in Postsecondary Settings
How is UDL Applied in Postsecondary Settings?
Instructional Materials
PowerPoints
- Use to give structure to a presentation.
- Integrate images wherever possible.
- Less is more.
Audio and Visual
- Represent language concepts visually.
- Include audio and video recordings.
- Read aloud overheads and what you write on blackboard; do the same with PowerPoints.
- Don’t lecture with your back to the class.
Texts and Notes
- Provide alternative texts that provide the same information.
- Students get to choose which textbook they want to use.
- Post instructor and student notes online (eg. WebCT).
- Remember that students will need time to have their materials made accessible to them; have important handouts/syllabi available early.
Group Work and Workshops
- Provide review sessions and discussion groups.
- Provide scaffolding.
- Scaffolding is support that helps students improve their skills.
- For example, providing a workshop in web design to assist with online participation.
