WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE? ¥ All levels of graduate students, from a variety of disciplines, including education, counseling, social sciences, law, social work, political science, American studies, ethnic studies, and any other disciplines where educators and community leaders work with individuals with disabilities. ¥ Students with diverse educational, multicultural, and disability points of view are encouraged to attend. DIS 699 is an elective course for the graduate Interdisciplinary Disability and Diversity Studies Certificate program, http://www.cds.hawaii.edu/main/certificates/ COURSE GOALS: ¥ Create linkages between pedagogy, universal design, and student success in the context of mentoring as a vital component of university life. ¥ Discuss diverse viewpoints about mentoring from disability awareness, policy, and cultural perspectives. ¥ Develop disability studies competencies, effective advocacy and empowerment strategies, exploring successful mentoring initiatives, opportunities to apply theory-to-practice exercises, and other topics related to mentoring at the postsecondary level.
